Steel City Codes, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is offering an after-school program virtually, where students will have the opportunity to learn computer science from high school volunteers.
There is no doubt that programming is an invaluable skill today, as nearly 70% of projected new jobs in STEM are computer related. Volunteering at Steel City Codes is a great way to help the younger generation learn and become interested in computer science, as well as enhancing your own skills as a programmer. To keep our chapters free, we rely on high school volunteers with a background in CS to teach and mentor our younger students. All high school volunteers receive PVSA Service Hours.  Prior programming experience in either java or python is required to be able to volunteer for this organization. 

This chapter will be held weekly from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m on Saturdays (volunteers will be expected to arrive and stay behind for around 15 minutes before and after the session to debrief), and will be completely cost-free. All meetings will be held on zoom. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and want to make a positive impact on your community, please fill out the attached application.

ADDED 11/5/22: 

Youth coalition Community Advocate Teens of Today (CATT) is currently recruiting new members for the upcoming school year.  CATT is a youth-led advocacy coalition working to counter pro-tobacco influences and expose tobacco industry practices.  CATT’s mission is to reduce tobacco use among teens in Santa Clara County through education, advocacy, and youth engagement.

We offer community service hours in exchange for participation in our activities.  This includes park cleanups, public comment at city council meetings, art projects, social media research/planning, and so much more!  We provide training for professional development, skill building, and often share community engagement opportunities to all our CATT members.

ADDED OCTOBER 2022: 
 OneProsper International is an English Learning Buddy Program, seeking girls to educate girls in India!  Many girls from low-income families in India aspire to speak English, but do not have anyone within their families to practice speaking English. 

How it Works:

  1. Students sign up to be an English Learning Buddy through our Google Form below
  2. Expected Time Commitment: 30 minutes per week for 10 weeks
  3. Buddies will be matched with a learner from a low income family in India
  4. Buddies and learners connect once a week via Zoom meetings 
    Weekly Meeting Schedule: Saturday 9 pm to 9:30 pm PDT
  5. Learners in India read from an English children's book while Buddies provide constructive feedback on pronunciation 
  6. At the end of the 10-week program, Buddies receive volunteer service hours.

Please note that this volunteer opportunity is limited to girls in Grade 7 to 12.

ADDED SEPTEMBER 2022

EEqual is a for-youth by-youth nonprofit dedicated to ending student homelessness through direct action, scholarships, and community advocacy. They are seeking volunteer high school students who would be interested in earning service hours and workplace experience by joining EEqual as an Instagram Content Creator or Communications Coordinator. All student work is performed asynchronously allowing for flexibility and giving youth members the chance to volunteer when they have time and focus on school work during busier weeks.

Instagram Content Creator
The Instagram Content Creator creates 1-2 posts/reels for EEqual's Instagram account each week. The ideal person for this role will be creative and artistic with attention to detail. The volunteer will need to attend a 1-hour meeting each week. The rest of the work is asynchronous (done on your own time). The expected time commitment is 3-5 hours per week.

Communications Coordinator
The Communications Coordinator creates EEqual's monthly newsletter, writes emails to donors, and writes blog posts for EEqual's website. The ideal candidate is good at writing, is creative, and can work independently. The volunteer will need to attend a 1-hour meeting each week. The rest of the work is asynchronous (done on your own time). The expected time commitment is 3-5 hours per week.
