Math

Saratoga High School supports a practice of open access for all students regarding course selection which allows students to choose which path they take (as noted by the arrows in the sequence chart) although we ask that students follow grade prerequisites and teacher course-recommendations. Read the full message here.

Math Course Sequence Update 2026

Program Overview

The aim of the SHS Math Department is to provide students with a sequence of study to be successful in our math program and one that suits their needs and skills. Development and proficiency of basic mathematical skills, logic, and critical thinking for further training beyond secondary school mathematics, and the appreciation for the contribution of mathematics to civilization are among the objectives of the mathematics curriculum.

We have a very successful Math Mentorship Program which all students can participate in to receive peer help. Please refer to the course sequence details on the following pages for course prerequisites and recommended grade prerequisites.

It is also important to note that while students receive course recommendations from their math teachers, open access allows students to choose which path they take (as noted by the arrows in the sequence chart above).

We encourage students to choose the course where they will be most successful by following the recommendation given to them by their Math Teacher, as well as the grades they earn in the prerequisite courses. Two years of math (reaching at least a minimum level of Algebra 1 equivalency) are required for graduation, although many Universities require 3 or 4 years of math for admission.
