Media Arts
MAP invites students to learn in a two year program (10th and 11th grades) with a focus on rigorous academic standards in English and Social Studies combined with skill development in multimedia fields such as digital film, graphic design, computer animation, and web design. Core English and Social Studies classes and program electives, offered in a smaller, specialized “academy” setting, will give students the opportunity to build strong interpersonal relationships with their peers, teachers, and industry professionals working in media arts related careers. In addition, the Media Arts Program develops curriculum and project-based opportunities for students through various community partnerships. These partnerships will give students first hand exposure to future career paths through guest lectures, allow students to get feedback on their work from industry professionals, and open the door to potential volunteer/internship opportunities at multimedia companies. "Adolescents need to learn how to integrate knowledge from multiple sources, including music, video, online databases and other media. They need to think critically about information that can be found nearly instantaneously throughout the world. They need to participate in the kinds of collaboration that new communication and information technologies not only enable, but increasingly demand." -Bertram C. Bruce, Professor of Information Science, University of Illinois

In the lower right photos, all MAP students participated in the Ft. Miley Ropes Course last September in San Francisco. This year, students will gather at Walden West for a workshop in collaborative work.  Other enrichment activities will include Cinequest Film Festival, the 'Great Race' in San Francisco, and a media blitz trip to Los Angeles to visit television, film, and animation studios including FOX, Universal, and to participate in the New York Film Academy workshops.Last year, students were treated to a private ComedySportz performance, dinner a famed Micelli's, an afternoon on Santa Monica's promenade, a tour of the Grammy Hall of Fame, and an evening in downtown Hollywood (see top four photos on the right).

In May 2010, MAP staff honored the students and their works at the first annual Saratoga Media Arts Honor Showcase Night (known as SMASH'N).  Nominated Animation, Film, and Multimedia Journalism projects competed for top prizes including the Industry Prize and the People's Choice Award.

This year, we welcome the incoming English 9 MAP students and see the opening of the new state-of-the-art Multimedia Center.
